Who owns a nonprofit, really?  In an association, the members, maybe.  In a foundation, the trustees, maybe.  In a health or human service organization, the board, maybe.  In a college or think tank or museum -- the President or Ceo or trustess or?  And, according to the IRS: the public -- all these other folks, paid or volunteer, are just placeholders, caretakers for the public.

But is this really the case.  The standard is that the volunteer folks are responsible for the nonprofit as "though it was their own business."  But the person actually managing day-to-day is really responsible and for the founder or the charismatic or the genius, the volunteer folks are actually their either as window dressing or to be called upon when the health, welfare or safety of the organization is threatened and/or a good contact or some other form of support is desired.

So the technical ownership is an undeniable fact.  And the practical ownership is an undeniable fact.  So how can the technical really manage the practical?  More to come...  Happy Spring!
