Folks might want to review the latest issue of the Nonprofit Quarterly (Fall 2007).  The issue features some interesting anecdotes about organizations that have faced various stages of life cycles.

While I was disappointed not to be able to add my own views (actually chronicled by NPQ with an article (Avoid Pigeonholing Your Board, 1999) in its early days) this issue does an OK job of pointing out some of the signs and struggles around life stages.

Might be worth a read as the organization also might be on occasion.
