It's not really like me to specifically support something but these folks maybe sort of have a good idea and for sure, they are supporting some interesting nonprofits so below is their press release and you can take it or leave it.

GOOD Magazine reminds me of  a Frances Moore Lappe (Diet for a Small Planet) attempted a magazine a while back called something like Good News Magazine which was focused on printing the good news not the daily bad news we usually receive.  The magazine didn't make it for lack of a sound revenue generation plan.  Let's hope GOOD Magazine can do better -- good nonprofits can use the money.

GOOD Magazine Announces Partners for 2008 'Choose GOOD' Campaign

Through the magazine's innovative subscriber model, the "Choose GOOD" campaign, 100% of the $20.00 subscription fee is designated towards the subscriber's choice of one of twelve non-profits. Integrating these partnerships across GOOD's multiple media platforms -- print, film, on-line, and live events -- will further the mission of these non-profit partners by raising awareness and visibility amongst GOOD's highly desired audience.  Young (median age 31), highly educated (78% are college graduates), and affluent (average household income is $100,000), the GOOD audience is comprised of thought leaders and tech savvy influencers who are actively engaged in numerous social and philanthropic causes.

View Article  Hershey Trust replaces Hershey Board

Wow, I thought it was enough to replace an exec and get management that more aligned with whatever my goals are.  But the Hershey Trust, the owners of the Hershey Chocolate company, replaced 6 of its board members as an action step to improving stock value -- the source of income to the Trust that operates a school for "underprivileged children" in Pennsylvania.  Two more board members resigned voluntarily.

I am particularly struck by how the Trust's board thinks that the membership of the Company board is so important - especially to address operational issues.  And, not being that conversant in the role of corporate boards (which I thought was about network and strategy), I could be wrong about the importance of the corporate board.

And, even if I am wrong about the role of a Corporate board, this action by the Trust certainly speaks to what the Trust thinks of its own role and membership -- being operational.  And, that, being operational, certainly creates its own challenges for nonprofits the size and life-stage of the Trust.

Should the Trust revisit Board 101 to better think about its role internally as well as with the Company?  Why is the Trust running the Company like they would their nonprofit?  How much license does the Trust board really have to muck up the business' waters too much more.

Thanks Readers!! The number of folks reading this blog has grown steadily. Unfortunetly, this blog host is not able to handle the traffic and I have moved my blog.

Thanks for helping to make this a success!!

My mission: to change the world one nonprofit at a time. I fix broken nonprofits with a focus on resolving nonprofit board/exec relationships. I also help nonprofit boards and staff figure out where they want their organization to be in the future and focus on the four columns of a nonprofit: program, management and operations, governance and sustainability.
