Saw an announcement today in the press about a woman who was named exec director of a nonprofit. The announcement said that the individual "has more than 10 years' experience in nonprofit management, previously working as a mayoral aide for a specified city and prior to that, an exec of a nonprofit."
So I ask, since when is service as a mayoral aid = to nonprofit management experience? Sure, a nonprofit exec puts out fires. Sure, some duties may involve planning and policy work but a Mayor is way different than a board of directors -- managing and feed 6-8-10-20 people who are all "owners" requires great fortitude, communications skills, tactics, patience and wisdom. Sure, these are gifts necessary to do the mayor assistant job but certainly not in the same degree or even approach running a nonprofit requires. Let's be clear, public sector service is unique from nonprofit sector service -- the challenges from serving a board, raising money, managing staff -- the differences never cease.
