Nonprofit Bad Example: Senator Grassley in Pursuit

In this Chicago Tribune story today, we learn that Sen. Grassley is interested in the records of an Iowa nursing home that is that state's largest.

Care Initiatives reportedly has paid its board members (in 2006) as much as $412 an hour. As Senator Grassley has written "It is very rare in the charitable sector to see board members compensated -- particularly at the level of the board of Care Initiatives." Well yeah, what exactly are these folks thinking? Nonprofit boards could conceivably be compensated for expenses but beyond this, purely unacceptable.

And then there's the $2.1 million payout to the company's former CEO. This of course really explains why board members are making up to $412 an hour.

Nonprofit nursing home boards beware -- Care Initiatives is not setting the standard for compensating a nonprofit board or execs!
